Emotional Grit With Stephanie Horak: The Mind’s Powerful Affects on Aging

Did you know your mindset can affect your physical health and wellbeing? Join Jennifer and Stephanie as they discuss Harvard’s Counterclockwise study, where psychology professor Ellen Langer accompanied a group of eight men in their 70s, as they were sequestered at a residential retreat. The setting was made to look like it was 20 years earlier, so the men began living like it was 1959. E.g., viewing the Ed Sullivan Show on a black and white TV, discussing ballgames from that era in real time, wearing 1950’s fashion, only seeing themselves in pictures from 20 years earlier not through mirrors today, etc. After believing and behaving for a week as though the clock had turned back two decades, there were notable differences in their dexterity, memory, hearing, cognitive abilities and more. They even looked younger to outside observers. Great examples of the power of perspective.
